Community Building: A Virtuous Circle
Community Building: A Virtuous Circle
This past month The News Tribune received the 2019 Corporate Gold Star Award, presented by the University of Washington Tacoma. The award recognizes one organization whose support during the year and over time has had a significant impact on the institution and its students.
When he accepted the award on behalf of The News Tribune, former publisher David Zeeck mentioned the ‘virtuous circle’ created by supporting the University. “When people go to UWT they tend to stay here,“ he noted. “So, we’ve increased the human capital hundreds of times over.”
The News Tribune has supported the University prior to its existence, covering the effort to locate a campus in downtown Tacoma. And has continued that support since the campus opened in 1990 by contributing to the Founders Endowment, the School of Engineering & Technology and student scholarships, and by sponsoring many university events, such as the grand opening of the campus and the Milgard Business Leadership Awards.
Zeeck, who founded South Sound Together, will continue to work with the group over the next few months as the new publisher, Rebecca Poynter, transitions into the role.
